NEW DELHI: Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane narrowly missed out on a well-deserved century in the ongoing Irani Cup match against Rest of India on Wednesday.
Playing at Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow , Rahane got out on 97. The right-handed batter fell to a bouncer from RoI pacer Yash Dayal in the morning session of the second day’s play.
Skipper Rahane and Sarfaraz Khan had formed a solid partnership in the middle, adding 131 runs for the fifth wicket for the strong Mumbai side. However, Rahane was surprised by a fast bouncy delivery and was out caught behind in a bizarre way.
Left-arm pacer Dayal bowled a well-directed bouncer from over the wicket. Rahane initially seemed ready to play the shot but then decided to let it go at the last minute. He was a bit slow in pulling down his hands. But in a surprising turn, the on-field umpire gave Rahane a ‘not out’ decision.
Rest of India captain Ruturaj Gaikwad did not waste much time and quickly went for a review against the decision. The review showed that the ball had indeed grazed Rahane’s glove, leading to his dismissal. At that point, Mumbai’s score was 270/5.
WATCH:

The replay showed that the ball barely touched his glove, but unfortunately Rahane was caught by the wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel. This ended his impressive innings in an unexpected manner.
Rahane, known for his solid batting, was playing skillfully. His partnership with Sarfaraz had put Mumbai in a strong position in the contest.
