GUWAHATI: An influential Meitei organisation has appealed to PM Modi to replace Manipur CM Biren Singh, citing his “inability to restore normalcy” after 17 months of ethnic violence in the state.
“We hope that with a new leader at the helm, peace and normalcy can be reinstated in Manipur,” World Meetei Council said Monday in a petition submitted to PMO.
The council criticised CM, who belongs to Meitei community, for not taking responsibility for the unrest that erupted on May 3 last year.
“In a democratic framework, accountability lies with the head of government for consequences of their leadership. A failure to govern effectively should prompt a resignation to allow for a new government under new leadership,” the council said, adding, “People have become refugees in their own homeland. Do they not deserve a government that is accountable and responsible?”
