NEW DELHI: India, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, faced a heartbreaking defeat against Australia in a crucial ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 match at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Sunday. The loss to the defending champions has jeopardized India’s chances of reaching the semi-finals.
Batting first, Australia posted 151/8 in their 20 overs.
India began their chase strongly, but faltered under pressure in the final over, finishing at 142/9 in 20 overs, falling short by 9 runs.Harmanpreet led from the front with a valiant 54, but was stranded at the non-striker’s end during most of the final over.
With this win, Australia secured their spot in the semi-finals.
CAN INDIA STILL QUALIFY FOR THE SEMI-FINALS?
Yes, India still has a chance to qualify for the next round, although the road is now tougher.
Currently sitting second in Group A after wins over Pakistan and Sri Lanka, India remains in contention.
New Zealand, positioned third in the group, holds the key to India’s fate.
If they defeat Pakistan in their final league game, they will advance to the semi-finals.
However, if Pakistan pull off an upset, India’s path to the semis remains open.
India’s superior Net Run Rate (NRR) compared to New Zealand means that a Pakistan victory would allow India to progress to the semi-finals.
Their hopes now rest on Pakistan’s performance.
