SURAT: Hours after being arrested for the gang rape of a 17-year-old girl in Mota Borsara village near Surat city, one of the two accused died after falling ill in police custody on Thursday.
Shivshankar Chaurasiya, 45, was nabbed along with Munna Paswan, 40, near Mandvi town on Wednesday night. Officials said Chaurasiya was taken to a community health centre (CHC) in Kamrej after he complained of breathlessness and anxiety. As his condition worsened, he was transferred to New Civil Hospital, where he died during treatment.
“The postmortem report will reveal the exact cause of death. He was taken to the CHC as soon as he complained, but his condition continued to deteriorate,” said Surat range IGP Premvir Singh. SP Hitesh Joysar said: “He lived alone and frequently changed locations due to his criminal background. He was involved in a brutal murder in 2017 in Ankleshwar and was wanted for multiple offences across police stations in Gujarat.”
Chaurasiya and Paswan were migrant workers from MP and Bihar, respectively. They, along with their absconding accomplice Ramsajivan alias Raju Vishwakarma, raped the teenager on Tuesday night, when they spotted her on the roadside with a male friend.
The duo stopped their bike and harassed them. The girl fled into a field while her friend, whom the accused tried to thrash with a stick, ran towards the village. Before he returned with some locals, the trio had raped the girl and fled. Paswan and Chaurasiya were traced with the aid of technical surveillance and apprehended.
